EMOTIONAL IMAGES FOR THE INTIMATE + NOSTALGIC.

SHELBY JOHNSTON.

Artist, mother, storyteller.

Over the years I’ve begun to understand how important not only loving your photographer’s work is, but also the importance of feeling a connection with them and their why. So, here’s my why, and how it deeply affects the images I create for my clients.

I am nostalgic for the present, especially since becoming a mom. It can be hard for me to enjoy the season I’m in because I know it isn’t going to last forever. Preserving memories is so important to me. I want to bottle up each season and keep it forever.

I really hate change. Most of the milestones in my life have come with many tears and a lot of nostalgic reflection. Looking back, being able to remember and appreciate my past is a big part of my process when it comes to transitions.

Becoming a mom knocked me on my ass in the best way. It altered my brain chemistry. Rearranged my priorities. I see the world differently as a mother, which means I photograph it differently too.

Since my kids were born I’ve felt my work shift to a more documentary style of photography. I care much less about perfection and much more about capturing what’s real in your world.

These are the types of stories I want to capture for you.
